Uniting Our Community Since 1980
Bangladesh Association of Chicagoland (BAC) is a vibrant, inclusive organization dedicated to uniting naturalized Bangladeshis and Bangladeshi-Americans across the Chicago area in Illinois through culture, connection, and shared purpose.
Established in 1980 by Fazlur Rahman Khan—the visionary architect behind the iconic Willis Tower—BAC carries a legacy of innovation, leadership, and community building. We celebrate the richness of our heritage through cultural events, community programs, and meaningful initiatives that strengthen bonds across generations. BAC is committed to growing an engaged membership, inspiring generosity, and creating opportunities for learning, collaboration, and service. Together, we strive to preserve our traditions, support one another, and build a strong foundation that empowers future generations to embrace their identity with pride while thriving in our Chicago community.

Our founder
Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan
Founding president, 1929–1982 · Structural engineer
“The technical man must not be lost in his own technology; he must be able to appreciate life, and life is art, drama, music, and most importantly, people.”
Born in Dhaka and trained at BUET and the University of Illinois, Dr. Khan invented the tube structural systems behind modern skyscrapers. He engineered the Willis Tower and the John Hancock Center, and his personal papers are held at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Our history
BAC was founded in Chicago in 1980, with the structural engineer Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan as its first president. For more than four decades, it has given the community one shared place to mark national days, welcome newcomers, and raise help for people in need.
1971
Bangladesh declares independence on March 26 and wins its liberation war on December 16.
1980
Bangladeshi Americans in Chicago found BAC, with Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan as president.
1980s–2010s
BAC raises tens of thousands of dollars for disaster relief in South Asia, sponsors the first North American Bangladesh Convention, and helps win recognition of Bangladesh Independence Day in Illinois.
2016
The Governor of Illinois issues a proclamation honoring BAC for its service to the community and the state.
Today
Volunteers keep the work going with year-round celebrations, youth performances, and community service.
